The five-star Hilton Hotel in Bandung, Indonesia, designed in contemporary-modern style by Singapore-based architecture firm Warner Wong Design | WOW Architects, yet fused with local traditional craft.

We began the entire design process by understanding the cultural, economic and geo-climatic context of the Bandung area… In order to tap into the visitors of this great city, and profile of the expected client base, the hotel was to deliberate internationally in spirit and be localized in design touches. High modernism fused with local traditional craft.

Bandung, is Indonesia’s third largest city, and 2nd largest metropolitan area. Located 768 m (2,520 ft) above sea level. Bandung has relatively year round cooler temperature than most other Indonesian cities, averaging 24 degrees. The city lies on a river basin and surrounded by volcanic mountains.

Luxurious hotels, restaurants, cafes and European boutiques were opened of which the city was dubbed as Paris of Java.

After Indonesian independence on 1945 onwards, the city experienced a rapid development and urbanization that has transformed Bandung from idylic town into a dense 15,000 people/km2 metropolitan area, a living space for over 2 million people. Although now densely populated. Bandung still has its charm to attract people flocking into the city, either as weekend travellers or living in.

The development of the Hilton Hotel in Bandung has been described as a progressive one looking to contemporize the field of hospitality in Bandung, while combining the experience of the local aspects of Javanese culture. As a city dense and sprawling at the same time, the only natural aspects left of the city are the surrounding volcanic mountains. Attempts were made in the hotels’ design to emphasize this borrowing loosely the idea of mountain rock with a river carving out a basin in the middle.

This further lead to the idea of an “urban resort”, where strong attention was given to landscape as apart of the total experience. The concept of shear forces are found in many parts of the design, skewing a twisting elements, such as twisted columns, twisting grand staircase, a twisting set of columns at the pool canopy.

Borrowing ques from the local landscape (surrounding volcanic mountains), the hotel is thus conceived of as a envelope around a valley basin, arriving at the final form with spaces that unify, blending the building with the earth, and becoming essentially an experientially rich hospitality space.

Public and private spaces flow and connect to each other and there is a cinematic treatment of the spaces and places in the hotel. We envisage that this strong sense of bridging will result in increased guest movements, and as a result, more intereaction, and this will be a benefit for the expected clientele for the hotel, seeking both an urban experience as well as a gateway from the bustle of the city.
