Arris Architects delivers an elevated cinema experience to Mumbai

Illusion into disillusion

“One revels in the illusion of a movie. We enjoy stretching and twisting our mind to the extents of disillusionment.”

The concessions for a 5 Screen multiplex located in Chembur, Mumbai - a ‘cinema centric’ city, are consciously crafted by Arris Architects around this abstract notion. They attempted to amplify the experiences of these illusions by destabilizing a stable geometric form of the hexagon into a harmonious and functionally stable design, with opportunity for accommodating all the functional requirements.

After entering into a double heighted lobby these stretching and twisting forms take you to a different dimension of space. The experience in the concessions is as thrilling and exciting as the cinema inside. The design exploits the 15 ft high linear space of the concessions lobby by accommodating the circulation and service spaces (screen entrances, concessions counter & office) within a dynamic hexagonal form. The twisting and stretching hexagonal form acts as the focal point of the design creating an ambience of a walk in art exhibit , the only exhibit being the space here. The location of the recessed seating lobbies would provide excellent vantage points for the patrons to appreciate the massive scale of the dynamic form. Well identified niches within the form create a dramatic entrance to the screens. The spatial treatment of the double height entrance lobby is carried out with subtle features, such as geometrical relief work and travertine cladding, respecting the proportionate volume of the entire space. Well integrated location of Fun Cinema signage compliment the overall harmony of the designed space.

The experimentation with different materials has lead Arris to achieve a balanced contract between the acrylic solid surface finished shell and the stark Belgium black flooring. The hexagonal form is finished in solid wood planks emerging out of the white DUCO painted plane whereas Italian marbles form the back drop for the seating niches and lift lobbies.

Lighting plays an equally prominent role in Arris' design development and here too LED lighting aids in achieving not only low energy consumption in lighting the whole space but also the different moods & effects in the concessions which in at core a quintessential cinema experience phenomenon
